Creating depth and texture with mixed trellis styles and paint colours.

Name of project:                               Cottesmore Gardens

Location:                                                South Kensington, London

GTC Project Manager:                  Matthew Philpin

Garden Designer:                             Cally Baxter

To transform this garden in South Kensington, London we worked with Garden Designer Cally Baxter to add a large amount of high quality painted bespoke trellis with arched mirror features. This was a garden refurbishment project and we removed and replaced a small amount of existing trellis as well as adding the decorative trellis to the rest of the garden.

The decorative trellis was designed in our studio then traditionally made in our Essex workshop by our experienced craftspeople, with responsibly sourced timber before being finished by the painting team. We have seen a trend recently for designers adding depth to trellis-work in gardens by using more than one tone and in this project features a subtle combination of our Manhattan Grey and Clay paint colours. The arched mirrors with box columns along the rear wall turn this large trellis scheme into a luxurious and interesting area, reflecting the greenery of the garden and making it look larger than it already is. The trelliswork also features a mix of diagonal and square trellis (HV48 and D48) which add depth and texture as well as a helpful support to the planting. The trellis is predominantly square for an ordered, calming feel and it also has a solid backing for increased privacy.

As well as the interest that is created from the mixed trellis styles and colours, we particularly like the consideration that has gone into what is reflected by the mirrors from various angles around the garden. The statue is perfectly positioned for this. It is a feature that the customer saw on their travels and purchased to have in their garden.

Around the rest of the garden, the trellis creates a frame for the gorgeous planting. There were a few challenges to work around including an established tree, but this wasn’t an issue for our expert designers and fitters, and it adds another level of depth and interest to the space.

Overall, this was a very large garden joinery project which increased the privacy and enhanced the beauty of the garden.
