our top tips for owning a log store

15.10.15

The leaves are turning brown and the flowers are all but gone, it seems that Winter will soon be approaching. Winter for us conjures up images of open fires, hot chocolate and snow. Wood burners and open fires have never been out of fashion and interest in them has only grown in recent years with new designs available.

As well as having a fire you generally end up buying a log store. The truth is, storing your logs on wet ground with a tarpaulin cover is not only the least attractive option, but also makes the logs less efficient when burning.

What are the benefits of having a log store?

Log stores are designed to minimise the logs exposure to rain and are also created to improve air flow around the logs to reduce moisture. Logs that are stored correctly contain less moisture - the lower moisture levels means that more heat is released when burning.

When’s the best time to fit a log store?

Traditionally, you should start splitting and storing your logs in December for use the following year. However, you can buy seasoned and kiln-dried logs throughout the year, which means that you can buy and set up your log store at any time of the year.

Where is the best place to locate a log store?

Ideally, you want your log store to be south facing where there is a wind or a draft. However, you may find this location is not close to your house and in the middle of winter you will have to brave the cold to bring in more logs. We suggest having two log stores; a smaller one such as the City Log Store would be perfect positioned by the back door as a half-way house so you have logs close by, whilst a larger one can be placed near a shed or garage for storage of more logs for use throughout the winter.

The log store is also a decorative item:
